State politics/Governor’s Office reporter. The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, Ariz., is looking for a seasoned reporter to join our four-person state capitol team. The journalist will focus on the Governor's Office, the upcoming gubernatorial election and state politics. It's a unique time in Arizona politics. The state faces historic budget deficits. Agencies have enacted massive cuts. And there's a contentious gubernatorial election just around the corner. The reporter will do everything from serving as a watchdog over the Governor's Office and writing about the state's political parties to analyzing policy decisions and budget proposals. The reporter must be aggressive and have demonstrated the ability to quickly turn sophisticated enterprise and explainer pieces along with dailies. The reporter also must be able to multi-task. He or she will have to juggle long-range stories and breaking news and will write for multiple platforms – front and local sections, our political blog and Twitter and Facebook.

The reporter must be a team player. He or she will work closely with the three other capitol reporters and the team leader. The ideal candidate is a self starter who has a proven track record. He or she has shown good source development in previous beats, demonstrated a devotion to watchdog journalism and displayed strong writing skills. Candidates should have at least 3 years experience, preferably covering state or local government.
